Gesture of Audrey

1987
sumi brush & ink
11" x 14"

I love doing gestures and for a while, my favorite way was with a big, fat sumi brush with ink. I didn’t have the control I would with a pen or pencil and sometimes got a beautiful, spontaneous drawing that way.

Audrey was one of my favorite models. She was a terrific artist who painted beautifully in oils. Because she knew what makes a good figure drawing or painting, she knew how to pose fantastically. On this day, she wore only a pair of baggy sweatpants, which she used creatively as a prop.
