St. Nick

2003
acrylic micropointillism
24" x 18"

I started this as a present to my wife but gave up on it after a lot of the yellow paint came off during the first washdown, due to my paint being too thin to apply. My drawing on the canvas was lost and I didn't feel like redrawing it.

A year or so later, I had a roll of film developed and was surprised to see a photo with the sketch on the canvas. I didn't know I took it! I scanned the photo, added a grid, and was able to transfer the drawing on the canvas.

I worked on it for a week and this is the result so far. I would like to work on it some more one day. I'd like to add more blue throughout much of it so it looks more like nighttime and makes the glow of the lantern and St. Nick's face stand out more.

By the way, the lantern is based on a real candle lantern my wife owns that she bought on a trip to Boston many years ago.
