Dining Room Painting

2009
acrylic
72 " x 36"

I did this painting for our dining room. Aside from being an hommage to Michelangelo's famous painting of the Creation of Adam, it also has other things to remind us of the trip to Italy my wife, her parents, and I took in 2007.

The city on the top of the hill is Castellini d'Chianti, a small town in Tuscany where we stayed. The food on the plate is pasta with wild board sauce, my favorite dish I had all vacation, which I enjoyed in a cafe in that town. My wife bought an olive oil dispenser in that city, which you can see Eve holding in the painting. In the background, a wild boar is running, bringing back a memory of one night when a herd of them ran in front of our rental car when we pulled into the villa driveway in the dark.

To add to the connection to our dining room, the dish God is holding is the plate pattern we have in our house. We also have the napkin you see being used by Adam. I added cooking ingredients in the care of the angels. If you look closely enough, maybe you can make out a bushel of tomatoes, a clove of garlic, and bunches of basil, oregano, and thyme in their hands.

Just for fun, I had one of the angels start spackling one of the cracks, which I tried to duplicate closely to the pattern of cracks you can see in the original.

And, of course, the painting itself will remind us that we saw the original painting it's based on in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It's not the first time I ripped this Michelangelo masterpiece off. I once did a drawing based upon it for a micropointillism show invite.

I wish I had a good title for this painting, Stephen Goodfellow said the name of the man should be "Al Dente." That's pretty funny, but I'm still not sure how to use it in the title.
